Certainly we are left only to speculate what Jesus had written in that sand (JN 8:6,8). Presumably He had written the names of the women whom these men had committed adultery with, but only God and dead men know for sure now. Hopefully we're not
that
hypocritical (often) but the warning (JN 8:7) is good for all of us.
Connect the Dots
This whole passage is different (it's in brackets in GNT and in italic in NIV) because it's not present in the earliest copies of the scrolls of John's gospel. But because it doesn't present anything theologically new, unique, nor contradictory to the rest, it was considered safe enough and included anyway.
